WHO IS THE CANCER DETECTIVE?

A 2025 Special Spotlight on Dr. Robert L. Bard for PinkSmart News
Written by: Graciella Davi

Dr. Robert Bard, a leading cancer diagnostic imaging specialist and advocate for non-invasive research in treatment validation, has launched the next phase of his "SCAN & TREAT" paradigm. Through a joint partnership with the AngioInstitute (501c3), the F.A.C.E.S. Foundation (Firefighters Against Cancers & Exposures), and the Women's Professional Health Alliance, Dr. Bard aims to provide evidence-based reporting using advanced ultrasound imaging technologies. His work with ELASTOGRAPHY and 3D DOPPLER BLOOD FLOW IMAGING has significantly enhanced the ability to detect and confirm cancer tumors in the prostate, breast, and other organs.

Since 1972, early detection has been at the forefront of Dr. Bard's mission. His commitment to researching and developing semi-portable imaging continues to advance his reputation as a trusted "cancer detective," offering diagnostic alternatives and second-opinion scanning for patients.

Screening dense breast tissue with ultrasound as a complement to mammography and using ultrasound for regular prostate monitoring as part of active surveillance are just two of the applications that distinguish Dr. Bard’s interpretive imaging. "If saving lives means providing greater access to point-of-care screening, then using the latest in real-time scanning also brings an added layer of safety and affordability. Patients should have access to regular imaging that reduces the risk of cancer malignancy," states Dr. Bard.

FUNCTIONAL DIAGNOSTICS
Since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, Dr. Bard launched BardDiagnostics, an evolution of his original practice. This expanded approach to functional and personalized detection integrates over 18 key testing and diagnostic services, including:

ProstateScan
DermalScan
Comprehensive Breast Cancer Screening
Wound Healing Imaging
Sexual Health Scan
Recurrence Monitoring
Genetic Predisposition Testing

Through strategic alliances and clinical partnerships, Dr. Bard continues to drive innovation in diagnostic care, making collaborative medicine a reality.

Dr. Bard’s pursuit of clinical advancements also includes the recent use of medical thermology, the study of heat patterns using infrared imaging to detect subdermal issues. Also known as Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI), this technology offers significant benefits for breast cancer screening. Through a recent partnership with Therma-Scan Reference Labs (AZ), Dr. Bard recognizes thermology’s potential as a powerful adjunct to mammography, MRI, and physical exams. "Thermology provides diagnostic insights that can enhance early cancer detection," states Therma-Scan CEO Dr. Philip Hoekstra. "When combined with ultrasound, it offers a next-generation screening strategy that is finally coming into its own."

CLINICAL LEADERSHIP AND ADVOCACY
On May 21, 2024, key members of the NY Cancer Resource Alliance (NYCRA) met with State Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick (Senate District 9) to address pressing issues in women's cancer care. This discussion covered current cancer statistics, diagnostic trends, and the ongoing struggle with restrictive insurance coverage. Dr. Bard contributed insights on NYCRA’s Women’s Health Initiatives, which include:

A Public Dense Breast Screening Project
Earlier Detection Programs for younger women ages 20-39
Advocacy for Statewide Genetic Predisposition Testing

The conversation also highlighted the troubling phenomenon of “cancer plumes”—clusters of breast cancer cases in specific geographic regions. "Physicians have a duty to go beyond traditional care for their patients," says Dr. Bard. "Senator Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick’s dedication to the cancer community strengthens my own commitment to empowering patients through education, early detection, and second-opinion diagnostics."
